Can you park in resident parking in Boston? ›

“Resident Parking Only” parking restrictions are in place on multiple streets in most neighborhoods of Boston. The program prevents long-term parking by non-residents on residential streets.

Temporary Resident Parking Permits

The Office of the Parking Clerk will grant a temporary permit to residents with a current Resident Parking Permit for rental cars only.

City of Boston parking meters are free on Sundays and legal holidays with no time limit being enforced. The three types of meters are single-space, IPS credit card and pay-and-display. Parking at single-space meters is paid using quarters and/or Boston Meter Cards.

You'll find meters throughout Boston. Most meters are active Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Please make sure to check the hours of operation when you park. You can only park for two hours, but some meters allow for more time. Please check the meter when you park.
