Different essential oils help with different skin and beard needs. Keep reading to find out which essential oil blend is best for you. This DIY also makes the perfect gift!

Reasons to Make DIY Beard Oil

While you can go out and purchase your own beard oil, another great option is to follow this homemade beard oil recipe. The most important reason to make your own beard oil is because you get to cut out a lot of toxic ingredients that are typically found in personal care products. These toxic ingredients are used to create artificial fragrances, act as shelf stabilizers, and much more. By making your own, you know exactly what ingredients went into making it.

Another good reason to make your own beard oil is that it is very cost effective. You buy just a few key ingredients, and then use them over and over again to refill the bottle. And it is convenient to have everything readily available instead of needing to run to the store when you’re almost out.

Finally, making your own allows you to create a customized beard oil. Choose the best carrier oils and essential oils for your specific needs. Also, you have the ability to customize the fragrance to your liking, while eliminating a lot of toxic ingredients that are usually added for fragrance to personal care products. Whether you typically gravitate towards a more woodsy scent, citrus scent, or like to switch it up often, making your own beard oil gives you a lot of flexibility.

How to Make DIY Beard Oil

The first thing you need to get started is a glass dropper bottle. An amber bottle is a great option because the dark color keeps light from reaching the essential oils. Keeping them in a dry place, out of direct sunlight will give it a longer shelf life and maintain the fragrance better.

Next, decide what essential oils you want to use to add fragrance. The essential oils you choose can be based off of scent preference or specific needs that you want to support for your beard hair. Try one of the recipe suggestions below, or come up with your own.

Finally, you need a carrier oil. A carrier oil is used as the base oil to “carry” the essential oils where they need to be used. It also dilutes the essential oils so that you do not experience any skin irritation. There are many different carrier oil options available and they all have different benefits. You can also choose to use a single carrier oil or a combination of carrier oils based on your needs.

Once all of your supplies are gathered, it is so simple to mix it all together and have it ready to use. First, open the dropper bottle and set the top to the side. Add the essential oil blend you have decided on into the bottle. In a 4 oz amber glass bottle, use about 40 total drops of essential oils. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with your carrier oil. Then, put the top back on the bottle and give it a shake.

Choosing the Best Carrier Oil

To choose the best carrier oil, first think about the specific needs of your skin and beard.

  • Jojoba oil is the oil that is the closest to your skin’s natural oil. This makes it a great option for sensitive skin and keeping your pores from getting clogged. It is also helpful in preventing dandruff and hair loss, and can even strengthen, thicken, and lengthen hair. Lightweight, non greasy, and great for all skin types. This is my top choice as a carrier oil for any DIY going on faces.
  • Argan oil is great for preventing split ends. It is moisturizing and can protect against dandruff and itchiness. Lightweight and fast-absorbing.
  • Fractionated coconut oil is a very light oil that doesn’t have a scent. It is also moisturizing and protects against split ends and dandruff. Great for dry skin, but not so much for oily or acne-prone skin. Make sure to use unrefined coconut oil. Note: Fractionated means that the coconut oil stays in liquid form, unlike regular coconut oil that is a solid unless heated.
  • Sweet almond oil keeps your skin looking healthy and feel more smooth. It is also very moisturizing. It has a slight nutty smell, but adding essential oils will mostly cover this up. Note: It can cause skin irritation if you have a nut allergy.
  • Grapeseed oil has a very light texture that absorbs into the skin easily. It is also great for fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Rosehip oil is full of antioxidants that are amazing for your skin and cell regeneration. It absorbs easily and has great moisturizing properties.

Tip: When purchasing carrier oils, make sure to choose organic and cold-pressed whenever possible. Even better if it is stored in a dark bottle to protect against UV rays so that the nutrients remain intact.

DIY Beard Oil Instructions

  1. Grab your glass dropper bottle and favorite essential oils.
  2. Choose a recipe from above or make your own with the essential oils you have available. Adding a total of 40 drops of essential oils to the dropper bottle.
  3. Once your essential oils are added, top it off with either a single carrier oil, or a mixture of 2-3 depending on your specific needs.
  4. Twist on the dropper cap and give it a gentle shake to mix.
  5. Squeeze a few drops into the palm of your hand and gently massage into the hair follicles and skin beneath.

How to Use:

Use on a clean, dry beard. Squeeze the dropper to add the beard oil into the palm of your hand. The amount you use depends on the amount of facial hair you have. You want to make sure you use enough to massage into the hair follicles and skin beneath. For longer beards, you can also use a comb or brush to spread the oil better.

How to Store:

To help your beard oil last longer, keep it at room temperature, in a dry place, and out of direct sunlight.

Recipe Variations:

  • If you do not have all of the essential oils to follow a recipe exactly, then get creative and make one with what you do have. Before mixing everything in the dropper bottle, open all of the essential oil bottles. Pick them all up like a bouquet, and slowly wave them under your nose while inhaling deeply. This will give you a good idea if you like all of the different scents mixed together.
  • Read about the benefits of the different carrier oils above and switch the recipe up until you find the one that works best for your beard.
