today. bracing for a deluge of decisions. the supreme court expected to rule on nearly two dozen cases over the next 48 hours. we're live with the key rulings to watch for on everything from abortion to the upcoming election. chaos at a graduation ceremony on new york's long island. a group of masked men stabbing two people at hofstra university. billionaire rhapsody. queen is the latest to fall in a catalog-buying blitz. how much sony music is shelling out for their hit songs. and they're loving it. how mcdonald's mascot put the mets back on the right track. it's june 20, "early today" starts right now. good thursday morning. >> glad you're with me. i'm frances rivera. the first official day of summer is kicking off with extreme heat and severe storms.

eastern mexico getting the direct impact of the first named storm of the season. tropical storm alberto triggering a disaster declaration in texas, bringing flash floods to the southeastern part of the state. nbc's sam brock spoke to first responders struggling to reach cut-off communities. >> reporter: trying to get your ambulance into a lot of these neighborhoods, how difficult is it? >> it's impossible. we wouldn't be able to drive into treasure island which is right behind you. >> meanwhile, mms a millions are >> meanwhile, mms a mi being broiled by a heat wave. let's get an update now on the path of tropical storm alberto. good morning, michelle. >> we're going to see landfall in the next few hours. but we have our first official tropical storm in the books for this season. right now we're looking at heavy rain falling.

the impact is still impacting southern texas. the location 120 miles from tampico, mexico. we do expect landfall in the next few hours. tropical alerts extend from south padre island. where you see the orange is where we see additional rainfall. we do expect improvement as we go throughout the afternoon. once it does make landfall and interacts with the mountains of new mexico we will see considerable weakening. where you see the green is the flash flood watch. corpus christi to laredo, be best to stay indoors. we're looking at flash flooding risks, too, as we go throughout the afternoon hours, especially in western texas. laredo down to brownsville, corpus christi could see flooding. we're looking at tough temperatures in the great lakes.

we'll talk about that coming up. a lot of eyes will be focussed on the supreme court today. the justices will hand down more rulings in just hours. we're in the final stretch of this term. and over a third of the cases on the docket this year are still undecided. alice barr join us from d.c. what are some of the major cases the court could weigh in on today? >> reporter: yeah, frances. we're waiting to hear on 23 cases still left on the docket, including a very significant one that could have a big impact on this year's election. former president trump has argued that he should not be facing charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. on the grounds that any official acts he took while in office are immune from prosecution he says. the court has previously ruled that presidents cannot be sued in civil cases for what they did while in office, but it has never decided on criminal immunity. the court also has another abortion case yet to decide.

the biden administration challenged an abortion ban in idaho, saying it violates a federal health care law that says treatment must be allowed in medical emergencies when the patient's health is at serious risk. idaho argues its law does allow abortions to save a woman's life. the court has also been asked to rule on whether or not people can be banned from sleeping outdoors when there is a lack of shelter space. an appeal court decided this type of ban is cruel and unusual punishment. but leaders in some western states have said that that makes it harder for them to regulate encampments in their cities. we could also cesee decisions o social media. in louisiana, the ten commandments will now be displayed in every public school classroom, under a controversial bill signed into law by

republican governor jeff landry. louisiana is the first state to have such a requirement. vladimir putin and kim jong un have signed a mutual defense pact between russia and north korea. the two leaders pledged to come to each other's aid if either is attacked. the agreement was sealed at a summit in pyongyang in a rare visit by putin to the isolated incu country. north korea is one of the key supplier of arms for the war in ukraine. claudio, what do we know about this agreement? >> reporter: good morning, frances. vladimir putin called it a breakthrough agreement that raises relations between the two countries, north korea and russia, to a whole new level, especially when it comes to security and military cooperation. now, as you mentioned, the two leaders pledged to come to each other's aid if one of them is attacked. but the immediate impact could be that north korea expands dramatically the number of

munitions that it's already providing to russia for its war in ukraine in exchange for a tr transfer of military technology. this technology could involve potentially, nuclear submarine technology and ballistic missile technology. that would eventually accelerate north korea's nuclear and ballistic mitch programs that are already threatening and posing a threat to the asian-pacific region, the u.s. allies there and u.s. troops stationed there. now after the visit to north korea, vladimir putin traveled to vietnam, where he received a warm and colorful welcome at the airport. now literally, just less than a year after president biden traveled to vietnam to strengthen relations between that country and the u.s. the point that on that visit, the state department spokesperson tells nbc news no

country should give putin a platform to promote his war of aggression and otherwise allow him to normalize his atrocities. frances? >> claudio lavanga. thank you. a multi-state manhunt is under way for an accused murderer. authorities say 50-year-old stacy lee drake is connected to at least three murders in oklahoma. he was lost spotted outside a hotel in arkansas, about 50 miles from little rock. he is considered armed and dangerous, and anyone who sees him should not approach him but contact police immediately. on long island, people were attacked at hofstra university. the victims were a student and their guest. they were slashed in the ear and leg respectively. both were taken to a local hospital. the academy charter high school in hempstead said the campus was now secure. they said it was part of a

domestic dispute, without elaborating. a new york city man accused of a horrific attack on two teenagers has been arrested. concerned new yorkers helped with the manhunt. here's rehema ellis. >> reporter: he was arraigned in new york city on charges of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl after school last week in a shocking daylight attack. police say the 25-year-old migrant from ecuador approached two teens in the park at knife point. according to the criminal complaint, the suspect tied the boy and girl to one another, gagged them, then raped the girl before fleeing the scene. police put out the sketch of the suspect, and later this video of him riding a bike. outraged, new yorkers responded. >> we waited for him all day. >> reporter: a community of good samaritans recognized the suspect as someone who lived in the neighborhood and waited for him for hours at a grocery store where he was last seen. >> i might see him walk into the store, andly to take him out.

>> reporter: the chaotic scene playing out live on the citizen app. >> he tried to run for his life, but he really tried to run, run, run for his life. he couldn't. >> reporter: police say he entered the u.s. illegally through eagle pass, texas, back in 2021, with his then-3-year-old son. >> he has no prior arrest history in new york city. >> reporter: authorities credit good police work and a concerned community with leading to the arrest. >> this is an amazing citywide manhunt for this individual. i am thankful that the community responded. >> reporter: he is charged with multiple crimes, including first degree rape and kidnapping. if convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison. back to you. >> rahema, thank you. let's turn to new mexico wi grow. around 500 homes have been destroyed. it's called one of the most
